The Question and Answers Session
Copyright (c) 1994, Joe DeRouen
All rights reserved
Each month, we'll ask a (hopefully) interesting question to users on
various nets and BBS's across the world and include the best answers
we get in this column.
This month's question: "What do you feel would be the single most
important thing that could be done to improve life in the United
States?"
The original message and responses are reproduced here in their
entirety, (Minus some quoting of the original question) with the
permission of the people involved.

STTS Magazine readers,
The question for the QUESTION AND ANSWERS column in the March issue of
STTS Magazine is:
"What do you feel would be the single most important thing that could be
done to improve life in the United States?"
As always, good answers will be printed in the March issue of the
magazine. They may be edited for clarity (ie: quotes of this message
taken out) but will otherwise remain intact. By answering this message,
you give permission for STTS to publish your letter.
Thanks, and keep reading!

Joe,
My reply to this is based on my own perception and beliefs. I feel
that one of the sources of most of our problem is all aspects of life
deal with communication. Communication breakdowns and barriers cause
many of the symptoms our society experiences. Communication is more
that speaking or hearing, it's listening and getting accurate meaning,
it's seeing and understanding what we see, and it's feeling empathy not
sympathy for the people around us. Maybe the scene from the play "Our
Town" by Thorton Wilder in which young Emily Webb, who died prematurely
at the age of 26, is allowed to return to earth from heaven one day will
illustrate what I mean.
To her mother and father this day is just another day in their life;
but, to Emily it is the only day that she has. Because of her new
insights, Emily is distressed by her family's lack of genuine
communication and by the distracted, matter-of-fact manner of her
mother. Finally in desperation she cries out:
"Oh Mama, just look at me one minute as though you really saw
me....Just for a moment now we're all together.....Let's look at
one another."
We live our live as if they are filled with tomorrows never ending.
With all the hardships, and terrible things that are present
for each of us to cope with daily, how much better would all our lives
be if we would truly stop, "look" and "listen" to one another.

Stamp out the political correctness movement centering in
Austin Tx and reaching out to the four corners of this country. It is
the most gross and over-popular forms of censorship I've seen in all my
days and, besides all of that, it cuts out most of my normal speech.

The single most important thing that we should do to improve the overall
quality of life in the United States is to revitalize our educational
system. Without an educated, skilled population, we cannot hope to
compete in the global economy. We cannot hope to find solutions to the
myriad problems facing society today, not to mention in the future. We
cannot hope to cure the diseases, ease the poverty, lengthen the lives
of all Americans, and generally improve the quality of our lives if we
do not take immediate steps to return our educational system to a level
unequalled in the world.
If we do not do this, nothing else we attempt will be accomplished and
nothing else we attempt will have any meaning.

The single most important thing that could be done in America today to
improve life would be tolerance. What I am trying to say is if everyone
in America could learn at least the basic concept and apply that concept
of tolerance to their lives it would help. Attitudes and concepts are
the driving force behind the creative forces in our country, if it were
possible to make all of those attitudes more tolerant, not only to their
fellow man, but to our neighbors, our earth and our general universe,
then I truly believe it would be possible for peace to exist. For better
or worse, we are all different, no two people are exactly alike and
those differences are what make us unique, interesting and
unfortunately, sometimes hateful and deplorable. Tolerance is an answer
if tempered with understanding. For example, I do not have to hate a
person because he is African-American or Oriental or Amerindian, just
because I am white. Nor do I have to hate any of the above if they are
bigoted and prejudiced. I have to learn that they are different and
there are reasons for that. No one is born to be anything other than the
environment in which they are brought up in creates. My parents are
prejudiced, but I am not and I believe it is because I grew up in a low
income area with a number of different races, religions and
socio-economic people. We went to school together, we learned, we fought
and we grew, but I still saw them as people. I believe in tolerance. It
won't solve world hunger, it won't stop wars, but it might help us move
towards a better existence where growth of new ideas and better
understanding might occur and where those things could help successive
generations conquer the vices of the past.

I think education should be foremost on the minds of everyone. With the
proper education for everyone there would not be many of the problems
of today. I think everyone should be offered the same quality
education from before the current elementary school grade levels. If
children were started off properly, and motivated to do their best in
school, they would have a better chance to continue that motivation the
rest of their lives. The un-motivated children of the past 15-20 years
have become the parents of the next un-motivated generation. (The cycle
continues) We need to break the cycle before any more damage can be
done.

We received several good answers this month, though not as many in
quantity as we usually do. This question was a little tougher, I think,
than the usual fare.
Now, I'll attempt to answer my own question: What is the single most
important thing that could be done to improve life in the United States?
Promote understanding. To me, that's the key to everything. If we
understand one another - truly know one anothere - there's nothing we
can't do together. Know your neighbor. Talk to the man across the
street. Familiarity can breed understanding, and we're all less likely
to hurt those that we know and like. America could be all the greater
place just for that. It's a chance we all need to take.
See you next month!
